Queensbridge will be at the World Cup
QUEENSBRIDGE ‘ADOPT A NATION’ FOR BIRMINGHAM’S GYMNASTICS WORLD CUP
Queensbridge School has been selected to be part of the Gymnastics World Cup (21-22 March) opening ceremony. Two pupils will parade the Ukrainian national flag at Arena Birmingham during the first night of the event. The men’s competition, which will feature Birmingham gymnast Dominick Cunningham, will be staged on Wednesday 21st and the women battle it out on Thursday 22nd.
The first pupil said: “I’ve always dreamt of doing something like this – it’s the biggest opportunity. It’s awesome to host the world’s best in my own city and it’s even better that we have someone competing from the area (Dom Cunningham).”
Looking ahead to the competition, the second pupil said: “It’s going to be so inspiring to see the best gymnasts in action. I hope to one day be as good as the professionals!”
The Gymnastics World Cup will see the world’s top gymnasts competing over all apparatus. The GB team will be up against gymnasts from eight other nations over two nights of competition in the all-round event, which for the men includes the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. The women will battle it out on vault, uneven bars, beam and floor.
Sarah Fellows, Head of PE at Queensbridge School also commented: “I’m so privileged to be a PE teacher in Birmingham with the Gymnastics World Cup later this month and the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Part of my role as a Head of PE is to open doors for students so they can watch those at the top of their game doing what they do best. It’s all about inspiring the next generation to get involved, and to have it on the doorstep is a bonus.”
The World Cup on March 21st and March 22nd is one of the first major international sporting events in the city in the countdown to the 2022 Commonwealth Games and will be the last event before gymnasts from the four home nations head to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games in Australia.
In celebration of the city being awarded the Commonwealth Games in 2022, Birmingham City Council are running an exclusive ticket offer for local residents. All tickets for the men’s event on Wednesday 21st March will be priced at £20.22 (booking fees apply).
